would a 36x36 square make an ok shawl for my girls?  if it could be 2 from 2 yards of wool, it'd be awesome.

If they're very, very tiny, yes. The hypotenuse of a 36" square is going to be about 51" (49" after accounting for a fringed hem), which would work for my rather shrimpy 8yo (who is almost 4' tall) or rather gangly 5yo (who is also almost 4' tall), but not for a girl who is approaching 5', if that helps?
