Found John George Brown, American/Scottish artist living & painting in U.S. during our period.   He was one of America's most popular artists of the time. He painted children and young women; he is a good source for seeing clothing of the period (with perhaps a bit of  typical artistic license? ).  Here is a link:  http://www.the-athenaeum.org/art/list.php?m=a&s=du&aid=533  The paintings are in chronological order, starting in 1860.

Thanks so much for sharing. I love these, especially all those little details in the background.

In the third image, Beware of the Dogs, is that a child's sized carpet bag?

Jessica, that is a good question!  Could it be a book bag?  It actually reminds me of antique knitting bags I have seen, with a square wooden handle and a clasp in the middle under the handle.  But I doubt it's a knitting bag!
