Hi, not sure where to put this , so apologies if in the wrong place.
I (along with about 8 others from 28th Massachusetts, not civilians) are hoping to attend this next year. I understand you have to be registered through a US group to attend - is there any one who might be able to look after a stray civilian?
From the U.K., I should have said.
Thank you very much!

Hello.
We will be attending this event, and there are several of us who are civilians. We wouldn't mind having someone new join us. We are from Kentucky, and will most likely be registered under the Tennessee Valley Battalion. (A confederate group)

How many people would be coming? And how old are they? Cheesy

Feel free to message me for more information, etc.

Thanks!

Lisa, P Palmer Dry Goods (Originals-by-kay et al) will be there in sutler row and you (all of you) are more than welcome to come by, rest, have a drink of something cool, and even help out if you've a mind to.

Hi there,

The Liberty Rifles Civilians will be there, and we have begun conversations with a group from Germany who we will be hosting. I am the civilian coordinator, and I am trying to put together a living history at one of the houses for us to participate in.

Still in nascent stages, but if that strikes your fancy, you can PM me.

Check us out.

Micaila and I are planning to attend and we were also just wondering how civilians can get in.

We'll be there with the just over 2 year old twins (Leading strings anyone?) and we'd LOOOOOOVE to meet all yalls!

Well all of you are welcome to visit Kay Gnagey & me at P Palmer Dry Goods in Sutler row.  P Palmer is the traveling name for Originals by Kay and Mrs Vincent's Parasol Emporium.  Not sure yet about Kathy Yurkonis, but she may also be there. (She has the complication of a school age daughter.)  You can meet my dh Henry and Kay's partner Major.  Major usually sits at the checkout counter.

So do stop by and introduce yourselves.  We can offer a cool drink, or hot coffee or tea most any time of the day, a cookie or two if needed, and a spot to sit for awhile, or stash your "stuff" so your hands are free as you wander about.

Gak!  I  CAN'T miss this now!  The real live Marta Vincent and Kay Gnagey are going to be there?  Can I shine your shoes?  Cheesy

So are Civilians allowed to come if they're not attached to a unit?  How does this work?

I would like to know also. My unit has been trying to attend different events back east for the past 2 years, but there hasn't been enough interest; so I think I 'm on my own.

When I went to the 140th only three people from my group went.  We didn't have a problem all registering as single participants.  I think the unit rule applies to the military guys as opposed to civilians.

That depends on the event. Some organizers will only accept people attached to units. I do not know (a) how many Gburg events there will be (there have been "dueling" Gburg events in the past) (b) who is sponsoring the event (the yearly Gburg event organizers take all, I believe) and (c) if there are any Gburg event postings with rules and regs listed.

Gettysburg has been broken down into several areas each year. Military camping allows for civilians to be mixed in dependent on the military group. A civilian camp with mixed impressions. A living history area where certain criteria are in place.
The living history area is geared towards spectators and they are looking for mostly third person impressions. In the past there have been laundresses, Generals, blacksmiths, seamtress, medical, USSC, USCC, and Aid Societies.
This event is very hot and is a 4 day event. Sadly, a number of people will be in regular clothes and gear by Sunday. So make sure to look for a group that has authenticity in mind when registering.

Warning -- I'm going to get sappy in a minute here...

I've been away from the sewing academy for a while, since my costuming has taken me away from the beloved mid-19th century (not too far--I made an 1870 dress before moving off into 1912 and now 1921!) Anyway, I think I'm going to need a new 60s dress because... I think I can come to Gettysburg!!! I just found out last night. Being from AZ, I haven't experienced any reenactments where they really happened. (I didn't even make it to Picacho Peak before the economy caused that annual event to drop off) Two years ago I visited Gettysburg with a very modern group of people and wore one of my dresses. I cried all over the place, thinking about the men who died there, especially since I know men of all ages who wear the blue and the gray. I pictured what it would be like for my best friend's brother to be missing, their father killed, and for brothers I had known since they were children to be fighting on opposite sides -- all things I have seen acted out back home. It would (will?!) be amazing to see so many people take part in such a historical event.

Information is supposed to be available on the web August 1st,http://www.gettysburgreenactment.com/150thInfo.htm,  hopefully that will clarify whether you need to be a part of a group. If you do maybe you need to organize a group, the Sewing Academy Misfits or something  Wink I'm toying with going. I've never been to anything outside the museum hosted stuff (and I really don't get to see that), I figure if I want to see one mega event in my life it might as well be the mega of all megas  Roll Eyes
