I am wondering about buttons for underpinnings, chemise, petti, etc. DO I need to stick with a certain size button, or is anything period accurate ok for underpinnings? Thanks! Julie

Disclaimer: I am an Expert Soccer Mom.

IIRC, the most available correct buttons for underpinnings are mother-of-pearl, smaller than 1/2".

How well do m.o.p. buttons hold up in the wash?

They do fine but if you're laundering frequently they aren't as strong as china. I use a gentle cycle and haven't had a problem.

Wonderful.  I'll have to try some on my next set of underpinnings.  Wink

Etsy can be a good place to pick up china buttons (if you don't have a local antique dealer that carries CHEAP vintage buttons, like I have  Wink).

Here's a few listings that came up when I searched "china button":

Thanks, I will have to try Etsy too. I bought my first set, but was afraid they might be too small, but I guess that is what they are supposed to be afterall.  I still have them, just saving them for some upcomig project. Guess this can be that project! Julie

I bought the white china 3/8 buttons from Abraham's Lady for undergarments. When I first got them I didn't think they would hold up. The idea of big button=strong hold and small button=no strength is something that will go away eventually. The buttons hold up petticoats very nicely!

Kendle, we must have the same buttons. I bought them there too on our last trip there. Julie
