As a relative newbie to the world of sewing, I had the opportunity to attend the 2012 Ladies & Gentlemen of the 1860s Conference in Harrisburg, PA.  Being somewhat hesitant that I would feel a bit out of place, that notion was quickly dispelled by the wonderful people that I met that were so willing to share of their knowledge and talents.  The displays of original clothing were like eye candy and I relished being able to get up close and personal in my examinations of the garments and other items out on display.

The conference workshops were all very well presented by subject matter experts.  I enjoyed them all and could not pick a favorite! Smiley  They had me in awe of their knowledge and the years of research that have gone into their presentations.  I appreciated the accompanying handouts and suggested reading lists, which are a great thing for someone like me who is just starting out.  Unfortunately I was not able to attend any of the pre-conference workshops due to my schedule, but I was able to purchase the pattern for the ribbon wristlets, so I am looking forward to creating a pair of those beauties.

I cannot say enought good things about the conference.  I also want to point out that the accomodations were wonderful and the price very affordable.  The conference rooms were easily accessible and the meals were more than ample and tasty to boot!  It seemed that every little detail had been attended to.  The Marketplace was chock stock with wonderful vendors and I was able to browse at my leisure and never felt that I didn't have enough time to shop...as my checkbook will attest to!

I am looking forward to next year's conference with great anticipation and would recommend anyone to attend, whether you have just put your feet in the water or you are a seasoned veteran.  There is something here for everyone, no matter your skill level, and what a chance to meet and connect with like minded individuals.

Kuddos to Carolann and the whole crew at Genteel Arts for providing us with the opportunity to connect and learn.

Another wonderful conference! I've been going to this particular conference for about 13-14 years now, and have loved every one of them.  They seem to get better each time, and one of the things I've particularly noticed over the years is that the dress of the participants seems to get better every year.  I truly do credit some of this to the wonderful information that is received at this conference through the presentations and workshops.  I always appreciate the wonderful display of originals, where you truly can get "up close and personal" with examination and photographs.  K Krewer is one who has a marvelous collection, is happy to share, and brings new things every year!  Maggie, Carolann, Jess, Philip and Janine, and so many others who are extremely generous in the sharing of their originals as well, are highly appreciated!

I appreciate the fact that the session do not deal ONLY with clothing or even material culture, but also with sociological and physical aspects of the period. And as great to me as well, is that Carolann recognizes the fact that we did not spring "full-blown" in 1861, but need to know about the previous years as well, since we would have "grown up" during those time periods.

I was unable to take any workshops this year, since I was teaching four classes on "personal flags", but did manage to trade kits and info with a couple of the other presenters.  I have great students in my class, and look forward to seeing some of their finished products! I saw some of the things that came out of other workshops, and was envious!

The fancy dress event on Saturday night was a delight! So many people with great imaginations, did their research, and who "get it"! Everything from the elaborate full armor of Nicky Hughes to a "Starry night" with a beautiful veil bedecked with stars!

I love the "conference fabric" dresses each year, since everyone truly does do different interpretations of the same fabric.  I brought out the blue in the skirt (a WONDERFUL Italian merino this year!) with a blue velvet basque, and then a second bodice of the skirt fabric.  K Krewer did a marvelous traveling dress, and we  even had a bathing costume.

All in all, a wonderful few days......visiting with friends from all over the country as well!

Thanks so much to Carolann and the staff for the wonderful job of organization they do, and all the great presenters.....if you've never attended this particular conference, it is well worth saving your pennies for!

Home now...exhausted, and already thinking about NEXT year!

One final conference post - it took a long time to wade through the over 1000 photos I shot over the course of the weekend!
