I'm making a dress for my dd. The dress is wool with a apron type design (au Tablier?) on the bodice. The strips, like lattice work, are done in velvet. I tried velvet ribbon and did not like the way it laid. Next I tried  1/2 inch wide velvet strips cut on the bias but with the edges turned under and the angled design this created to much bulk. Out of the two the velvet strips worked best, going around the curves well and remaining smooth.

Any other ideas or solutions that would help?

These bias strips, are you using a needle board to press the velvet? A velvet press needle board will help you make easy use of velvet cloth cut into trim pieces, and super-duper-easy applique, reducing the bulk at the edge. Wink

You can also reduce turn under bulk by shaving the velvet pile from the turn under section.  Its easily done with a lot of care and a men's electric razor.  Its the same technique used for people who work with real and faux fur.
