Wow!  Is this really the third event in this series already?

The event in 2008 (1861) was a blast, though I was sad to miss the last event.

I'll be returning to the event this year, and hosting The Restaurant (name forthcoming)- I currently have one cook on hand, and am actively taking resumes' for 1-2 additional cook staff (in particular, looking for individuals comfortable and with experience baking over an open fire).

Also looking for 1 individual to assist with the front house, serving/cleaning up meals.

Note:
This restaurant is in addition to the Boarding House/Tavern establishments which will also be serving food/drink.

Please contact me directly if interested in being apart of this.

I am hopefully going this year. I have friends who are pretty well known in the reenacting society in Georgia, and they have offered to help me get everything together. I was so excited that I babbled to my Mom about it and I'm not sure that she got everthing... Roll Eyes I sent an email to my friend that had like 5 -oh my gosh- es in it.  Tongue

Anyways, if everthing works out and I do get to attend, I can't wait to meet all ya'll! Grin

Hello, I just wanted to remind folks that this event will soon be on us and some key things are about to happen. The most important is that we are very near to meeting our limit for people to attend. If you want to experience this event and have not communicated with me, Linda Nyland, (female coordinator) or Jim Butler (male coordinator) I recommend that you get motivated in that regard. The other key issue is that the registration fee increases at the end of August to $45.00.

So here is a handy checklist on how to start communicating with the female and male coordinators:
1. Read the guidelines and have an understanding of what this event is about,
2. Email a picture of you in the period clothes that you intend to wear to the event,
3. In that email describe your reenacting history, the impressions you do, and what impression/ role you want to do at the event.

And, as stated above, don't wait too long, we will meet our limit soon.

Please contact me at svarvar@bellsouth.net and Jim Butler at unionguy1@comcast.net
Kind Regards,
Linda Nyland

The Star Restaurant has almost completely filled it's allocated roles.  Still looking for individual with experience baking over an open fire - we have 1 spot left, but must have experience.

Event is going to be a blast!

Wow!!! Really less than 2 months out for this event.

Anyone working on any special projects/impressions in support of the event?  I managed to wrangle in 5 yardbirds this weekend that will be making their way down for the event.  Menu for the Star Restaurant went to Mrs. Simpson for review last week/approval - and we passed with flying colors.  There should be some real treats at this event for folks who want to experience 19th c. epicurean culture!

Linda and I will be there, and we're definitely looking forward to eating at the restaurant and trying some Georgia cuisine. I don't suppose we'll be able to order chowder and baked beans anymore. Wink

I will be there as well, with Joanna Jones. Slowly making my way through my "to-sew" list, can't believe it's less than two months away. And October 28th is my birthday, can't think of a better way to celebrate a new year!

Awww! Wish I lived closer to Georgia! (No, I'm not close to Georgia where I am in NC) I'd go if I did.  Cry (But anyway, I'm saving up things and time for Gettysburg!  Wink Hope I see some of you there!)

Ms. Ruth - not close where you are in NC...you must be in the eastern end?

Mr. Trent - who said no chowder?  Chowder's of various forms frequently pop-up throughout southern cuisine...

I just received confirmation from work today, that I have Tuesday off...so as soon as the carpool convenes @ Dry Bridge on Tuesday, we can get on down the road (approx. 13 hrs.).  I'm looking forward to stopping @ the CW Naval Museum in Columbus Weds. morning!

We recieved GREAT news on the Restaurant last week.  The Restaurant has been moved to the Rawson House, directly across from the Byran House (Walker's Boarding House)!

Restaurant Staff:

Paul Boulden (William Harper, propr.)
Kim Boulden (Susan Harper, wife of William Harper)
Joe Caridi (XXXX, propr./cook)

You mean that Georgians don't live exclusively on ham, hominy and mint juleps, getting up from the dinner table only long enough to whip their slaves? Huh. This trip is going to be very educational.  Wink

Well - I'm sure this will be a learning oppurtunity for us Virginians/Marylander as well.

Personally I love ham, the saltier the better, hominy - well it's o.k., and Mint Juleps - well I'm still in search of someone capable of making one, but I do live in Virginia.

Also - please know Mr. Trent that The Star Restaurant is prepared to take your yankee dollars as an investment in our establishment -  Wink

I thought you were born in Georgia! I've been to the upper south--in fact, I met my wife in Kentucky when I was preaching there after graduating from Oberlin--but I've never been to the deep south. She assures me Kentuckians never treat their negroes as badly as Georgians do.

(By the way, you do realize I'm just yanking your chain. Grin In another life, I ran the boarding house that'll be across from the restaurant and cooked all the meals there like a native Georgian, and the Walkers who run it now are, or were, my cousins in that other life.  Grin Here's the way the neighborhood looked two years ago:

Trent, Hank; Lewis, William; Boarding House Keepers
Trent, Linda; Lewis, Elizabeth; Boarding House Keepers
Ehas, Jeff; Walker, Freeman; Farmer
Ehas, Lauren; Walker, Edney; Boarding House worker)

Mr. Trent,

Yes - I realize much of our discussion right now is in jest. Cheesy

I was present for the 2008 W-ville event, portraying Albert Strong the fishmonger...but my pard who were suppposed to bring the fish had something come up (i.e. something about being active duty Army).  So I portrayed A.S. the fishmonger with no fish.  Fortunately, the event wasn't as complex as it is now - and I was able to bide my time assisting the ladies cooking food and chatting with that rascal 'the Heaf'.  If I recall for that life - you entertained yourself working over the garden plots in the same vicinity.

I missed the event 2 yrs. ago, had hoped to get on in the leathershop this year - but my pal Mr. Caridi called in help for this restaurant...and so now I am William Harper (GA veteran and propr. of The Star Restaurant).  Along with managing the restaurant - I'll also be providing fowl for the event...and have thus far managed to wrangle in some dominique/brahma crosses, and will be throwing in a few muscovies for good measure.

Well, yes... I was employed as Mr. McDonald's gardener that year. It didn't seem any less complex to me--I had to take orders from Mrs. McDonald to get the garden ready for the guests who were coming for the speeches, since I needed to earn my wages to pay my expenses. I had to ask for time off from work to appear as a witness in the trial, help out Charles with the barbecue, take my shears down to the blacksmith to get them sharpened... Seemed pretty much like real life. I quit and started the boarding house with my wife the following year.

So is anybody else rushing to get as many projects done before Westville as I am? Undecided Roll Eyes Cheesy
I want to know what you are working on!  Grin

I am finally feeling like I have everything under control in regards of what to bring. I have a couple more things to procure/make, but they are easily doable - need to make and mark a new set of underthings, make some repairs to one dress, finish my wrapper, and finish putting ties onto my bed tick, and then I could go without having to worry!

I don't know what the market is, but my business in town likely won't have anything to do with going to market. Joanna Jones and I are going as carpetbagger Yankee ladies with the American Missionary Association. We're going to Westville to set up a freedmen's school. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of you there, even if we won't be on speaking terms Smiley If you see a tall girl walking into town on Thursday looking very fashionable, wearing a black fashion bonnet with a veil, carrying two carpet bags, that'll be me. I expect I'll probably stick out like a sore thumb.

And Sunday the 28th of October is my birthday. Couldn't think of a better way to spend my birthday weekend Smiley
