And since it is Halloween, the FIDM Museum blog is talking about fancy dress! http://blog.fidmmuseum.org/museum/2009/10/fancy-dress.html  and gives a link to a wonderful 1887 fancy dress "manual" http://www.archive.org/stream/fancydressesdesc00holtrich#page/n5/mode/2up .  Even though it is later, the vast majority of the costumes and "advice" still are appropriate for an 1860s fancy dress event!....just have to modify some dress shapes, and hair in some instances...but lots of costumes mentioned!

Thought this might give some more ideas to the folks attending the Conference in March!

So excited about the Conference!
BUT, the hotel does not have any more rooms available.

I am looking to share a room and expenses.
Anyone?  Please.

Hi, Janet -

Unfortunately the hotel is completely sold out on Thursday night.  Sad  There are rooms available on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings.  I'll let you know if I know of anyone looking for a roommate.

See you in two weeks!

Janet,
I have a bed available in my room on Thursday night only.  PM me if you want to talk about it.  I'll be away from my computer until late Monday night.

One of the highlights of my year! Not only for the opportunities to speak and do workshops, attend great seminar sessions and workshops, but also because we get to connect and see people that we only see that one time a year!

I love it!

So glad to know I am not the only one who gets so excited at the prospect of the conference.

Looking forward to seeing everyone a week from today.

They have.  I know instructor ones don't go out until a little later.  I'll double check with Carolann to see when she mailed them.

The conference provides not only an enjoyable and educational time, but sort of a focus for my whole year's research and living history activities.

I'm not sure whether it's because the speakers choose topics that are items are current issues of interest in the reenacting community, or the reenacting community dialogue is influenced by topics discussed at the conference -- probably a bit of both.  But whatever the cause and effect, I marvel at the timeliness and relevance of Conference presentations to what's going on in "the hobby."

One of the first conferences I went to featured Juanita Leisch talking about the research for her book, "Who Wore What."  It was groundbreaking for me -- imagine trying to identify the norms for what The Original Cast wore, and influencing our portrayals !  Susan Lyons Hughes always gave broad historical trends and then tied them to the people we were trying to portray, while she and Nicky did well-thought-out portrayals of scenarios and the material culture that would accompany each.

Those are just a couple of examples.  I could list many (and certainly don't mean to insult anyone by absence -- this is just what immediately came to mind.)  My main point is, that the conference serves as a mixing bowl where folks in the civilian side of the hobby come together, but also a catalyst for research and development -- so the impact goes far beyond Harrisburg.

Miss Bethke, and Other Attendees,

I sure hope that you take pictures and will share them here. One of the highlights I think is seeing all the folks well dressed in wrappers, and the collection of period clothing. For me, I'm one who would love to attend, but alas I am so poor that I cannot even pay attention! Wink
Enjoy the conference. Cheesy Cheesy

I will not be attending the conference but would like to go and see the juried market on Friday. Does anyone know where to find the vendor list? Also, is the display area open to the public?
