Thanks!  It was my first try at making a bonnet and even quilting (yep, I'm a newbie) so... I didn't want to spend a lot of money on them for the girls because they are notorious for doing unusual things with their stuff: like the dog wearing them and then eating them, or deciding to use them as a bucket for picking extra ripe blackberries.  I figured if they did use them and do something unspeakable I wouldn't be too upset.   |

It was one that Nona Nelson drew up. Anna had it, and Dana traced it.
I think you can probably do something similar with the various hood patterns out there. There's several commercial ones, and Sarah Jane Meister has a free one on her blog. If you do a search on the SA for "hood" you should come up with several suggestions.

Well, I'm still plugging along on my Februrary projects. Last weekend I finally got my parduesus pieces put together. It only took 18 or 19 years since I cut the blasted thing, but the pieces are together and are waiting to be hemmed! Still working on the embroidery for the belt too. Any March sew along, or are we waiting for April?  |

Mrs. Peebles... I 'm still plugging away too... we're almost done though, mostly just eyelets to bind, button holes to make and a smidgen of elastic to insert and I have my corset done. You're not the only one. I WILL complete this thing before the babies come. I swear!

Heidi, My great plan for the day is to simply get the seams done and hang that coat in the closet and forget it! I had thought of trimming it with the excess velvet, but gave that idea up this morning to consider the thought of making my husband a hunting cap instead with the wool and velvet scraps.  I really dislike waste of cloth, so feel compelled to find a use for it. Now, if wishes were horses..... I'd get that white wool dress cut as well as a bottle green overcoat done before I need them next Thursday for an event I'm hoping on attending. It's a cold one, so must plan on warm wools. I have others to wear, but simply want to get these old projects out of my way too. My hope is to get the list of the year finished off so that my conscience will be clear for taking other bolts of cloth out of my stock for whims. Whims are those spur-of-the-moment projects that we get just before an event, or something that you don't really need, just wanna do for the heck of it. Whims are great fun for cheering the spirit and fun sewing. |

My husband has been scolding me for starting 4 other projects while I'm still working on the corset. It's just that making dolls and breakfast caps and bibs is just so much more interesting than a dumb old corset no one will ever see... Even if they are all half finished and may remain so for years to come.
Starting is ever so much more fun than finishing.

My Masters is getting in the way of my sewing!! I have so much to do! Not only sewing period but, I have some modern stuff as well. I have yet to order my bonnet supplies!! I have it all picked out, just have to get it already!
Cut out my Paletot in muslin but, have to eek out sometime to sew it and fine tune the fit....for an end of April event.
Just needed to complain a bit....sorry.

I'm hear ya, Cindy. I totally understand what your saying. :)I have the problem that I can't seem to get in the modern sewing mood. But I guess that's okay so I can finsh the 20 things I need by April. I really should try to make my sister a saque coat for the event to cause I have a feeling its going to be cold. Thank goodness I have a wool dress. :p |

My best friend dislikes cutting cloth, it takes her hours to cut an outfit. Me, I get it done rather quickly because I love to cut cloth with shears. That being said, the difference between us is that once the cloth is cut, it drives me nuts until I get the project done. Currently, I have only two projects cut and unfinished, that AHC dress and that wrapper. I'm getting closer to getting them done, but knowing that both may be beyond my current size, doesn't inspire me to get them done quickly. Generally speaking though, once cloth is cut, I'm on that project rather fast. As for my friend, cutting is her worry, but once done she also can turn her time towards it, even if a bit more slowly than I would like. I say this because she allows herself many interuptions, instead of simply committing herself to a few hours of sewing a day. You cannot stay focused on your work if you decide to get up and water plants, or check emails, or off to Starbucks. Granted a coffee of playing with the pussycat is important, but sticking in that chair and sewing means something also, and unless you focus and say to yourself "I'm gonna get this done today, or put an hour or two into the work without quitting" means that you will get something completed, and with that comes a sense of accomplishment. Mind you all, I'm not scolding, just saying that "I" enjoy that feeling of accomplishment, even though at times it drives me crazy to force myself to stay in that chair and continue working. Ah, but what a fine relief to enjoy a clear conscience, a sense of accomplishment, and the free will to dream on the next project or outfit. I hope to get that parduseus finally done today or tomorrow morning with all the handwork. Then on to the next, or possibly those four projects that I really want to do or get out of my hair! I must say that without the forum here, I'd likely be less enthused to get some of these projects done. With the encouragement and insight of reading what other folks are working on, it does help to keep my mind busy and planning onto the next &c. Thinking some more..... I suppose that I would have fit rather well into the mode of being a true period woman. For the past few weeks I've been embroidering a belt for an old dress, and I've not yet even got to the belt part, just busy with those dangle-ly ribbon bits! I've yet to trace out the waist belt and start embroidery on that yet! Does it bother me to spend hours on a tiny project that few would see or notice? Not really. My reason for this is the satisfaction and relaxation that I receive from doing a project that has taken the time and attention that it deserves. As it says in the bible, and I'll paraphrase ..."whatever thy put thy hand to, do thy darndest!" In other words, all you can try is your best, so be happy with that, and enjoy yourself. So, I hope that the rest of you enjoy your sewing, even if it seems a challenge, or difficult, be happy with your work, and be proud of a job well done. |

I'm frustrated with a dress I am sewing for my daughter (can't decide just how much growth room I should put in that bodice) I've put so much thought into I've lost momentum. As my rapidly expanding size requires support, my accessory for February is an "abdominal" corset.
Go to Paula's house and beg her to help me draft a pattern. Draft Pattern Thank you Paula! Now I have to figure out how these crazy pieces go together!

Figure out how the heck I'm going to close this thing. (Don't want to unlace EVERY time and slide over head.

Sew side pieces
Sew back pieces
sew shoulder straps
sew nursing gussets
sew in steel stays/ cording
Sew eyelets in back
Sew eyelets in front
Lace corset up
Buttons
Button holes
Wear constantly.
HAAAAALELUJAH!!!! I WIN! I'm DONE! I have a corset! HORRAAAY! Mrs. Peebles you can be proud of me now. |
