My non-expert opinion:
The first does not have enough plain white background and is, indeed, to random
The second (turquoise) just screams 1960s to me (having lived through that era)
The third is the only one of the 3 I would consider,due to the wider spacing of the elements, but I'm not positive it is "right".

Non-expert opinion here: The purple lawn looks really nice. Just remember that lawns tend to be lightweight cotton to semi-sheer weight. The two lawns that I've bought from FFC have been LOVELY but not sheer-sheer.  So it just depends on what you want. |

The plaid gauzes might otherwise be okay, along with one of the floral prints that is in pink or blue, BUT they are described as having a crinkly texture -- I'm thinking hard but I don't believe I've seen that in a period cotton. Viv, the print is nice for modern wear but looks too modern to these eyes.

Not that I really need any new dress fabric.... but fashionfabricsclub.com is having another silk sale. I'm picking up some silk lining and this one caught my eye for a ball gown. Love the colors but the embroidery has me questioning it's appropriateness. Any comments? |

I have swatches of this fabric from several years ago. It came in blue, green, red, and gold. The stripes are wide and would make beautiful bonnet strings. Stephanie

Jessica -- the one good thing about being in mourning is that I have little excuse to buy wonderful fabrics for new ball gowns -- or I would be tempted to snag this out from under you! The embroidery is fine. This reminds me very much of a couple of originals in green and gold.

the fabric is very nice, but maybe a bit subdued (dull) for the ballroom.
A little pet peeve of mine:
the flowers are NOT embroidered onto the fabric, they are woven in (called "broche")

...which is a really good thing, as in my experience the machine-embroidered taffetas always get puckery around the embroidery, whereas these woven patterns behave more like period brocades. I think on the right person this could be stunning - on me it would be a drab, washed-out mess, but I have a strawberry-blonde friend on whom it would be gorgeous, especially with gold or green trim and accessories.

I wonder if anyone can advise me about the following fabrics on the
Reproductionfabrics.com site -
AV213Y - aubergine sudsy floral
HAX17B - blue Hanna Willis spray
BW214N - blue floral stripe
DV137L - double violet leaf stripe
DV138L - scratchy floral
I want to make two "nice" , fashionable wash dresses or a dress and wrapper for a fairly well off, middle aged, middle class English lady. The year is 1863. Any advice, please?
