I'm calling all hands to support my wife's rival "Ernestina" in getting her recognized as one of Massachusetts' many valued historic sites.

This ORIGINAL Gloucester Schooner still sails and is being kept afloat by us volunteers with oakum under our fingernails, who, according to the website, lovingly preserve her.

All you have to do is go to

Its mission is to identify and recognize the 1000 most truly special places in the Commonwealth, in order to celebrate pride in our history and culture, increase knowledge of our natural surroundings, and encourage regional and international tourism.  Go to

No --Thank YOU and thanks to everybody who votes for "Ernestina"before April 1st. Being moored in New Bedford down an old cobbled street from the Whaling Museum, she is often obscured from view by the large working trawlers berthed all around her. A place in the tourism promotion network would mean a lot to the Ernestina volunteers. If the Mass-vacation links continue to be a problem, you can always go to her facebook page:

Keep watching the site, as when she is ship shape again she will no doubt make visits all along the eastern seaboard. As far as a trip to the midwest - not likely. The Ernestina crew is good but not THAT good.

I've voted!  Good luck!  It excites me to see people recreating ship voyages using period methods.  I especially love seeing historic ships get the love and care they so richly deserve.  There are too few of those ships around.

My parents are visiting Boston right now and they called me up to tell me they were looking at historic sites (big shock, they're not history people, they're science and medicine people) I sent them to find the Ernestina.    I can't wait to hear all about it!

The faithful legions on the SA who have hand-sewn in places that are almost invisible for the sole reason that its "the right thing to do" will appreciate this.

She's back from the Fairhaven Yard and looking great!

-Her new foremast came from Washington State.
-Her new transom planking is from New England hardwood.
-The delays were courtesy of the Federal Government.


She looks downright diminutive next to Friendship of Salem, but then everything looks bigger when you're scraping paint!
