I'm calling all hands to support my wife's rival "Ernestina" in getting her recognized as one of Massachusetts' many valued historic sites. This ORIGINAL Gloucester Schooner still sails and is being kept afloat by us volunteers with oakum under our fingernails, who, according to the website, lovingly preserve her. All you have to do is go to http://www.mass-vacation.com/1000/and nominate "Ernestina". Pass this on to anyone you know who loves historic ships and is willing to stuff a ballot box in a Massachusetts election for a good cause. http://www.ernestina.org/history/index.htm Your narrator "showing love" with a paint scraper. The volunteers page: http://sailernestina.org/ Fair winds to all -Tom

Another thing that has to be fixed! Here's a paste from the e-mail they sent me. It worked as of 19:32 today Dear Tom, Thank you for being a loyal supporter of Ernestina. Friends like you will help the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey Association (SEMA) reach our goal of seeing the ship sail again! This is the first update using ConstantContact. I hope you enjoy the new format. If you have any suggestions, let us know. Fair Winds! Mary Anne McQuillan President Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey Association, Inc. Schooner Ernestina is one of the best places in MassachusettsIf you believe Ernestina is one of the best places in Massachusetts, here is your chance to let everyone know. The Special Commission Relative to Designating 1000 Great Places in Massachusetts was created by an Act of the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Deval Patrick on January 15, 2009. Its mission is to identify and recognize the 1000 most truly special places in the Commonwealth, in order to celebrate pride in our history and culture, increase knowledge of our natural surroundings, and encourage regional and international tourism. Go to http://www.mass-vacation.com/1000/to nominate Ernestina. Hurry the deadline for nominations is April 1.

Ms Jean: My ancestors voted in Massachusetts in 1655*. Thanks to you, Sailor tom, I voted there today! No --Thank YOU and thanks to everybody who votes for "Ernestina"before April 1st. Being moored in New Bedford down an old cobbled street from the Whaling Museum, she is often obscured from view by the large working trawlers berthed all around her. A place in the tourism promotion network would mean a lot to the Ernestina volunteers. If the Mass-vacation links continue to be a problem, you can always go to her facebook page: http://www.sailernestina.org/?q=node/159#comment-61/and find the link to the voting page. Keep watching the site, as when she is ship shape again she will no doubt make visits all along the eastern seaboard. As far as a trip to the midwest - not likely. The Ernestina crew is good but not THAT good. *Did those same ancestors vote for James Curley in the 1930s?

I've voted! Good luck! It excites me to see people recreating ship voyages using period methods. I especially love seeing historic ships get the love and care they so richly deserve. There are too few of those ships around.

My ancestor arrived in Massachusetts on a ship in the early 1600's. I hope my vote did a little to preserve any maritime tradition in that area.

Another vote for Ernestina. I found the link worked in your quote, but not as you typed. Strange. They appear to be the same. Jennifer

My parents are visiting Boston right now and they called me up to tell me they were looking at historic sites (big shock, they're not history people, they're science and medicine people) I sent them to find the Ernestina. I can't wait to hear all about it!

Ernestina made the list, along with the entire Working Waterfront, Working Lighthouse, Working Library, Working Theater and ten other places in the Working Port City of New Bedford! http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/07/12/1000_places_to_visit/Thank You All For So Much Support! Ernestina (Left) is visited on the New Bedford State Pier by Amistad from Mystic Conneticut. They both look very photogenic, and there's only a CENTURY difference in their ages!

The faithful legions on the SA who have hand-sewn in places that are almost invisible for the sole reason that its " the right thing to do" will appreciate this. Here's a video of the first-rate shipwrights of Boothbay ME pegging 150 year old reclaimed planking with sledge hammers and chisels. http://sea-fever.org/2010/10/28/schooner-ernestina-great-video-of-most-recent-work-by-boothbay-harbor-shipyard/Are there easier ways? Yes. Are there cheaper ways? Yes. Is there any other way? NO! Again, thank you all for your support. -Tom

She's back from the Fairhaven Yard and looking great!-Her new foremast came from Washington State. -Her new transom planking is from New England hardwood. -The delays were courtesy of the Federal Government. She looks downright diminutive next to Friendship of Salem, but then everything looks bigger when you're scraping paint! http://www.ernestina.org/news/ernestina-returns-from-shipyard/Thanks to all her SA friends!
