I've heard that little boys always had their hair parted on the side, and little girls always had it parted down the middle. But I just can't tell... if the child is a boy, he looks a little old to still be wearing a skirt.
I have seen photos of boys with very full/wide skirts, either wearing small hoops or very full petticoats underneath.

That is a good one! My "mom eye" wants to put this as a little girl with an atypical hairstyle--while center part is absolutely THE most common part, there are occasionally variations. It could be a little boy, though... hoops on small boys are not typical, however, and the skirt really does look as though it has some steady support under there.

That is quite the picture! At first, I wanted to say that it was a girl, but then seeing the side part, I thought, "maybe it is a boy". I too think that he'd be too old to be wearing skirts still.

Alright! Thanks for the input everyone! I too thought that if it was a boy, he looked a little bit old to be wearing a skirt. But the side part REALLY threw me off. I looked at it and looked at it and I still really can't decide.  |

That one *is* a puzzler! I want to say boy, with a mother that doesn't want to let him grow up? But I'm not sure. Poor child, if it knew we were sitting around all this time later analazing it's gender. :-P

I think this is a boy. Not only is the hair parted on the side, but it is cut a lot shorter than a little girl's would be. As to a boy of this apparent age wearing skirts, this outfit looks like it is an ethnic costume. In fact, it looks an awful lot like a boy's version of a man's Greek costume that is on display at a Greek restaurant I frequent (family owned, on the third generation, the family still has very close ties with the homeland).

Somewhere I read/heard that in Europe, esp France, boyswere often dressed similar to girls until pre-teens, to protect them from . . .spirits?

Just my gut feelings - he LOOKS like a boy in the face.  I wonder if that chair is misleading us into thinking he's taller than he is? Might that chair be in miniature? If you KNEW he was only 4, would you feel differently? AND, I wonder if he's just wearing stiff tafetta skirts, not a crinoline? Just pondering... He's a cutie, either way. B. |
