Ginny - velvet isn't too hard - this was cotton velvet - it is messy - there are bits that come off the edges everywhere - plan to vacuum daily! The one frustrating thing is that because of the raised pile, whenever I matched it up with the wool the sew a seam, and pushed them together to pin, the velvet pile would of course fall one way or the other and carry the wool with it, so the edges wouldn't match up any more. I don't know if this makes sense or not. So I would have to reposition the wool about 1/16th of an inch one way or the other and then when I squished them together, the edges would line up.
The biggest thing I came across repeatedly is the need to work with "the roll of the cloth" - CarolAnn has discussed it a couple of times. It really really helped the collar and cuffs to lay nicely when they were turned over.
Thank you all for your lovely comments.

Joanna, it looks wonderful! I cannot wait to see it tonight!
(Also, correction - I made it in five days, two days of cutting and two-and-a-half days sewing. And that is why we are having temperatures in the 40s this weekend.)

Lovely, lovely work, Joanna! And it took me like 4 years to finish my coat, so I definitely have coat-finishing envy.

LOVELY coat!!! One of my favorite color combinations! And you made a lightbulb go off in my brain about the turn of the fabric!!! I must have missed that post.....Hope you get a chance to try your creation out soon! The weather has been SO strange this year! I have not worn my warm winter coat more than a week total this year, and from someone always cold that's saying a lot. We usually get weather in the teens and single digits around here, most of the winter. Not that I'm complaining. -B

You all are making me SO jealous!! I'm loving everyone's accessories! So beautifully done! I'm super excited because my family and I are attending a CW ball this weekend. I won't be going in costume, but I'm still excited that I will actually get to be going! And, we might be joining up with them (or a few of us, any how!). So, maybe I'll get to do CW things, after all!

I wanted share my lucky find! I found this Chantilly lace shawl the last time I was at my local Goodwill Outlet store, where they sell clothing by the pound. It measures 110 x 50 inches and has a few small holes and a 1 ?? tear at one end. Seeing that it cost me about 25 cents, I?m not complaining!

Absoultly GORGEOUS! I had a chance to buy one for $90, I think the deal you got was much better . Everytime someone makes a find at goodwill I want to run out and hit every store in the area!!

Yeah... SLIGHTLY JEALOUS of the deal you got there - only slightly jealous... slightly.
(goes into the other room and explodes with jealousy from the incredible deal. Heh.)
Seriously, congrats! I've been keeping an eye on local goodwill places... maybe ONE day a nice restorable parasol will crop up there. One can hope!

Those bow-trimmed pockets are really cute and the gauging on a cord has absolutely the Right Look. Very well done - thanks for sharing!
