Seriously TOO cute!
I'd have flipped by it in the magazine with a brief, "What the heck?" Glad you tackled it. Liz W.

Men are made in the image of God. Gentlemen are manufactured by tailors, barbers, and bootblacks. Woman is the last and most perfect work of God. Ladies are the productions of silk-worms, milliners

Betsy, did you hear that? That was my jaw hitting the floor. Superb work doesn't half cut it.

It's not too often that you see something so brilliant AND pretty AND hilarious, all at the same time. All hail the pineapple! I bow down to your bravery in tackling it and your skills in executing it.

Kristen, if I had pierced ears I'd snatch those off you. Those look fantastic!

Several people have commented on that. There really isn't much out there (that I have seen) for the unpierced ears. A few in my group don't have them, so know I'm wondering if I should expand a bit to accommodate the earlobe situation...

Your earrings are very charming! It would be great if you would post the inspiration image as well as citing it.
I don't believe non-pierced earrings are period, unfortunately. Perhaps expand into other types of jewelry instead? Plenty of scope for necklaces, bracelets, brooches, watch fobs, hair ornaments...

I read in a (period) book about a girl tying on ear-bobs with a 'bit of silk' and I'm assuming she had hair almost covering her entire ear for it to work. I'm thinking that it was silk embroidery floss, and that she hung/tied the floss around her ear like those wrap-around earbuds, but I've never tried it. It might be interesting to look that up and see if it was just made up for the book or if this was something that more than one lady did.

I think it was done occasionally - I just meant that earrings were not manufactured with clips or screws. Of course, such things only worked when it was fashionable to cover the ears with hair!

Hello Ladies! Thank you for the feedback! I have gathered a few ideas from here (which I will put in bullet points because I feel more organized): 1. Here is one of my inspirations. I can't find my other links at the moment, and yes I will be moving on to hair jewelry soon http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_IDxnZvnGnKM/TDUpYZOJ5TI/AAAAAAAAAI0/7k7dF5EG7K8/s1600/Godeys+-+Dec+1860.jpeg2. I am glad to finally hear whether or not the clip earring is period accurate! I did search to no avail, so thank you Jessamyn! On that note, I may still make a few pairs while noting that they were not accurate (I can't exclude my unpierced sisters!). 3. I would like to see more about the silk bit as an earring. I am rather curious. Kristen http://www.etsy.com/shop/BiblioBeauty?ref=si_shop

Sorry Jessamyn, I wasn't trying to correct you! Just adding something which (while it puzzled my ten-year-old brain at the time) intrigued a girl who used to wear snapdragons as earrings until she was old enough to get pierced ears. If I am able to find any pictures/illustrations I will post them! -B

Never apologize for contributing more good information to a discussion! (Even if it does contradict someone, or if as in this case it just adds an aspect.)
Love the snapdragon mental picture!

I made one of those adorable Pouche Pompadour travel bags from Godey's in December 1864: It was very easy and quick to put together, and turned out adorable. Can't wait to take it on my travels!

!!!!! Very adorable. Congrats! This is on my list-of-things-I-want-to-do-but-might-never-actually-do, currently! What's it made out of? Do you have pictures of the inside? I'm envious.

Thank you! It's made out of some plain worsted wool I found at a fabric outlet - the original instructions called for rep. No pictures of the inside, but it's pretty nondescript - lined in cotton sateen (the original directions said "calico", so I went for a smooth white fabric). Will likely be taking orders for these in my Etsy shop, once I get it up and running. I really enjoyed making it!

Well, its not clothing....but it is an accessory, I suppose, so I will use this thread, rather than a new one to brag about my "new" acquisition. I just recently became the proud owner of an 1868 Gold Medal hand crank sewing machine. I'm in love!
