yup. just rats. I grabbed hunks of my hair that I've been saving, pinned them on and draped the hair over them.

And I was pretty proud of this hairdo. It was my first attempt at copying the hairstyles I saw in original 1850s images. I fear it will never be this perfect again, so I had to snap pictures to remember the moment. Heidi, I saw the front of this do on another thread and it is lovely, but the back...sensational!!! That second to last one looks like she threw her hair up in a modern clip!! Anyone know what's going on there?

I was wondering about the two last, too. The last one... I've thought about. I see it around for 1850's a bit. But I could be wrong about how it's done... it looks like a braid or a band in some pictures is put halfway in between the backs and fronts of the front sections (does that make sense?) and then the back is put over a rat and twisted back with the front part of the front section. I don't know if it makes sense. But I think with patience it might be able to be done. But then, maybe it's something completely different!

She reminds me of the actress Emily Blunt for some reason.

Oh my! Aha moment! I've been trying to figure out how those hairstyles were done for awhile now. I got close, though... but I couldn't figure out quite how to control hair trying to get out of it among other things. *hits head* I'll have to try it! It looks very doable... not to mention a fun idea for modern life.

Ooh, I really like that one! It's a great style if you have slightly shorter hair. The one from Peterson's is really pretty, too!!!

I am trying to help a friend get a semi-period look. She has very short hair (nothing to roll back), but it could be pulled back by a headband. Does anyone have a picture, modern or period, of an adult woman with center part, short, slicked down and held back by a headband? A wig is not an option Thanks, Joanna

I've seen pictures of adult women with short hair and a center part. I think it was 1840s though... don't recall headbands. It just hung down straight. Her hair was about chin length and slicked down as best she could in a form vaguely resembling the fashion of the time.

I know I've seen pics too - in the past - but I don't have one now and I am trying to get her to see that what I am talking about did exist and is worth at least trying. Better than a modern short style.
