'Cause I'm a nerd and bored this evening. Yes, those are just pincurls and twisted bits of hair and my front section is parted as far back. It's just for fun... Wink And to show off my hair. Lol It's not completely dry from my shower hours ago this morning so it isn't as fluffy as it normally would be. Tongue Enjoy! Wink

In that picture, it looks like at least part of the braid is a fish bone braid. It looks like it started as a fish bone, then she just gave up and did a regular three-part braid.

Having done a herringbone braid (a few times, I find it very difficult with my ultra curly hair) I have a hard time believing she did a half and half.  Unless she did it differently than I did....I am wondering if it's two different braids?

Having hair that is waaaaay past my waist, I'd have to say that she probably has at least two braids. One does indeed look like a herringbone/fishtail type braid. The other is probably a section of hair done in a regular 3-strand braid to, possibly, hide the ends? Either way, it's very interesting! Especially all the curls and such at the front!
And here is a larger pic for those asking. In color, too! Wink Thank you for the compliments! I wonder how well it would turn out if I actually tried to do this style? Lol

Looking at the original photo again, I'm wondering if it's a single braid wrapped around a bun.  A herringbone braid makes a very wide and thin braid, and it looks like a herringbone all the way down.  If I have time this evening I'll try it on one of my sisters and take pictures of my results...Cheesy  That is the neatest thing!

Nice job, Deanna, and I really like your hair.  Did I mention I really liked it?  It's gorgeous.

It looks herringboney to me- when I see herringbones they don't look wide and thin, but rather fat... and I don't think it could possibly be a normal braid.

Deanna, that's really pretty! How long is your hair? You say waaay past your waist and I'm not sure what that means because everyone's concept of hair length seems to vary.

If my hair were thick all the way to the ends, maybe I could make my hair look like that... wish I had someone to fiddle with my hair because it can be hard to do it yourself, sometimes, and I'm still trying to master a basic 1860's look (well, I'm not always trying).

Amorette-- My hair is over three feet long. At last measurement (from the tip of my crown), it was 38" long. But that was a few months ago and it grows pretty fast. Guess I should measure it again soon!  Cheesy Have you seen the painting of Sissi with her hair down her back in the lovely white gown? That's very similar to what my hair looks like and it's length, including the waves! I'd like to have a period photo done of me in that same pose sometime this year. Need to figure out who to have do it and when/where to have it done! Then, maybe, just maybe, I'll cut it. Some. We'll see. *gulps nervously* Tongue  Grin

Like this thread is named, long hair is a woman's "crowning glory." Probably many of us, including me, wish we had hair that long. Mine is only 18", and there are so many simple beautiful things you can do with long hair that short hair doesn't allow. Growing thick hair out takes a while.

Sally's is selling herringbone braids that modern girls are using to wrap around their heads for headbands but that would work for our time period too.

Great hair Deanna! You have a great talent....please pass it on to the rest of us.  Wink

Kendle, are you serious? Sally's is selling pre-braided hair? Must have....

Is this it?

I couldn't find anything else that was already braided on their website.

The bandagey underneath bit is unfortunate, but the "hair" part looks really good!

Yes, Mrs. Smith, that is it.
I went in to find cheap hair for rats and noticed those, which I've never seen before. Just for clarification: herringbone/fishtail braids are period correct?

I'm sure you could somehow rip off the bandagey part, and keep the braid intact. If anybody buys one and does this, please do tell all.

My understanding from the parsing we did on another thread was that fishtail braids were okay.

Heck, they better be. I bought two on wig.com.  Cheesy

You can buy a special "wig glue" to glue the ends of the hair if you want to remove the bandagey part, they should sell it there. You just have to hide the little nub ends under your hair.

Me??? I'm planning on wearing it as a headband to keep my bangs and side hair back. Nothing spectacular.  Cheesy

I bought two because I think I want one for a modern headband, too.  Cheesy

This is "inspiration hair" rather than "how-to hair," but I couldn't resist sharing this great image from 1846:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VChlnV7tA7o/TBiEkyOcPpI/AAAAAAAABPg/Uw7n_-HXL5s/s1600/Maria_Weston_Chapman_BPL.jpg

Is that a comb at the base of the bun, or a fancy braid, possibly of false hair, or something else? Loooove the curls!

So I ran across this set of instructions in the 1860 Peterson's, and I'm wondering if that suspiciously different bit of her hair isn't a "hair ornament" per the illustration?
