Hello!!

I have a couple questions about my 18 month old brother's clothes.

How long would his gowns be (he's very active)?

I may be dressing him for a event on October 11th and here in IL. I don't really now what to expect so: would it work to make him a gown out of light weight wool? Or should I just make the gown out of something else and just make his outer garments out of wool?  I hope y'all understand my question.  Undecided

Dresses of mid-calf to just-below-the-knee are great for active toddler people, boys and girls.  You could absolutely do a lightweight wool dress with light wool outerwear, or if damp/cold aren't going to be a huge factor, you could do cotton with wool outerwear instead.  A lot depends on your event weather, and how cold "cold" is, plus what sort of heat he produces on his own, and whether or not you'll be outdoors without shelter all day, etc.  I'd make sure you have a spare wool shawl, woman sized--they make ideal "snuggle up the kiddo" wraps!

Brooke, just a suggestion for fabrics. Little David had a long-sleeve cotton dress for this event last year and a wool coat, but he could have stood to be a little warmer. Sad If its going to be like it was last year I would go for wool for both a gown and a coat. That is what I'm making the boys for this event as well as wool mittens and flannel drawers. Of course, now that I have said that it is probably going to be balmy and 75 degrees!  Roll Eyes October is SUCH  a weird month for weather!

Thanks, Sarah! It was kind of cold last year at Princeton so if end up making clothes for that event I'll do all wool!

Okay so I don't really think this fabric is period, but I thought I'd ask y'all to be sure. So let me know if you think they would work for dresses or pinafore for my brother. BTW we do 1860's.

They both look good. The plaid is a homespun, right? That'll make a nice pinafore!  Smiley

It would work for a dress or a pinafore. Pinafores don't have to be homespun.

I used a homespun type fabric for the boys newest pinafores, since it was what I had. It doesn't wear the best but I think it works just fine if thats what you got, I would use it!

I'm going to the shadows of the blue and gray too! Smiley

Just asking since I am going to the Hartford City reenactment here in IN that weekend. Since it is one of IN's bigger reenactments didn't know if you would come over and visit. Cheesy But have fun. Good luck with all of your sewing.
