Is there an age distinction/progression of boys clothing from back fastening frocks to front closing tunics? For example, are back fastening frocks more like dresses and used for the younger toddler still in white and colored drawers? Are back fastening tops still in use by the time a boy graduates to short pants? Is it personal preference/economic class driven?

I am trying to decide whether to put my 3 year old in a back fastening frock or front fastening tunic. I like the look of the back fastening better for this particular plaid, but he has already graduated to short pants and it seemed like the back fastening look might imitate "dresses" more closely and be used for younger boys.

In this case, there's no rule or trend at all--it's strictly personal preference for the style.  You can use whichever you like and be perfectly appropriate.
