Those little balls are called "pills" - and they can be a real pill sometimes.
They're caused by abrasion, and some wool fabrics are more susceptible to pilling than others. You can't prevent them from forming, but they're easy to remove with a sweater shaver or stone. You can even use an electric razor, although I wouldn't use your father's or your husband's for that purpose.
