I'm looking for cadet grey cloth. Now I know it should probably be broadcloth which would mean the only place that i know of that you can get it at is Hainsworth. But besides them, will meltons and some coatings work? And where can I find this distictive color?

Strangely enough, I don't believe Hainsworth offers broadcloth in a true "cadet" gray.  I used their "Ascot Grey", which is a bit lighter color, for this garment:

Their "Grey Melange" overcoating is very close in color, as seen here:

However, it's very thick and would not be my choice for a frock coat.

You might check with Needle and Thread and see what they recommend.

Thanks,

I believe Hainsworth RAF Lt (if it is still offered) would fall in the varied hues of 'cadet gray'. Renaissance Fabrics has some 'cadet gray broadcloth' for 16.00, but from what I have handled of it the it needs to be fulled and pressed if it is to be used. The weight of the cloth would fall on the heavier end of the broadcloth spectrum.

Renaissance Fabrics does, believe it or not, have a nice price on linsey. It is the same cloth that Wm. Booth draper sells and is almost 10.00 a yd cheaper.

I will check out Renaissance fabrics and see what's there. If my client decides to go with the Hainsworth, are those specific colors only available from Overseas? I don't recall N and T carrying anything but black and navy blue.

Has anyone worked with cadet grey from c and D Jarnigan? I noticed they have it available on their website, but Bill says that swatches he got from them were less than desirable.

Hi Bevin,

N & T only carries Hainsworth wool in black, dark blue and red.  However, I know someone who has about 2-1/2 yards left of the same fabric used for Kris Kransel's coat  Smiley.

Jarnagin used to (ca. 2000) have some pretty nice dark blue broadcloth, but I don't know anything about their gray.

Thanks,

we're awaiting a few swatches, including one from Renaissance. The client would have preferred Hainsworth, but is on a time crunch and can't deal with the fiddly nature of overseas ordering. Plus, it's his third uniform an he needs like 7 yards! Yipes! So we'll see which is the best swatch here and go with that.

On the bright side, I started finding LOTS of info on medical dress, including a few extant uniforms. Was surprised to learn that the black facings on collar and cuff on one of the uniforms was cotton, not wool. Then found another with black velvet! These medical types were quite spiffy dressers....
