I looked at the original and it appears the stripes on the bretelles and the striped panels on the sides of the skirt are cut on the same angle (same degree) but in opposite directions. If they're not cut at the same angle, i.e. 90 degrees for true bias, 75 degrees for slightly off-bias, the outfit is going to look choppy and cluttered. You can piece lots of small scraps together, matching the stripes, to get the effect you want.

finished dress
quite tired baby

the dress flat

Bodice close up

The skirt turned out to be much fuller that the original, possibly too full. I changed the triming pattern a little bit. laid flat the sleeves look just like the original inspiration! (which makes me proud of my pattern drafting skills)

Very cute dress!  Love the bretelles and the way you extended the same treatment all the way down the skirt.  I also really like the way you did the trim.  It really sets off the finished dress!

It is absolutely adorable.  It makes me sad that my boys are way to old for for dresses.

Lissa:

LOVELY!

That is a WONDERFUL repro item, with a great period "aesthetic" to it.  Love, love, love the stripe interplay, and the trim is very cool.  The skirt is actually looking right on target for the 50s/60s in a style like this; moderate fullness, as you have, is exactly what you're aiming for, and is quite consistent with the originals I've handled thus far.

He may be tired, but he's darn cute!

His dress looks wonderful! If I had just seen a picture of it, I would definetly have to examine it closely to determine if it was an original or not!

Okay, when can I have kids to dress cutely?

What a charming dress! Great job, Amanda. I especially like the trimming - a perfect period detail that is usually overlooked. And you look lovely in your new dress, also.

The trimming was what I liked most about the dress, I couldn't leave it off!
