I have an 8-year-old boy that I need to dress.
The only patterns I have been able to find so far are the Period Impressions' and Galla Rock boys' shirt patterns, and the Period Impressions' boys trouser pattern. Will any of these be suitable as far as accuracy? Also, the only jacket/coat pattern I've been able to find is the Period Impressions one. This isn't an immediate concern right now though, because our earliest event next year is in Louisiana in late March, I don't think it'll be cool enough to require a coat or jacket.
I also don't recall having seen any boys' drawers patterns. Will I have to draft down my husband's drawers pattern? (Not sure how I'll do it!)
And I'm editing this to add that I also need some advice on headwear.

I'm trying to solve the pattern/headwear issue for older boys, but it's a long-term project.
I've heard folks with intermediate sewing skills having a decent time of the PI patterns for boys. Following a pattern similar to the trousers, but simplified (no pockets) will yeild drawers. I know--not ideal.
I expect to spend most of 2007 working on the older boy's patterns, with a goal of trousers, undergarments, at least one coat, and caps. I'm going to try and do basic shirts as a freebie.
Cap styles: the "newsboy" or "mechanic"/"engineer" cap will work for boys pretty well. Very stylish! Look for all-wool, with a wool or leather bill.

Have you seen the movie "Seasons of the Heart" by Feature Films for Families? The little boy in there (Daniel, I think his name is) has what looks like the types of cap that you mentioned. Wild Ginger Software has a free "Wild Things!" program download that has a newsboy cap on it. I'll have to see if I can find some scrap fabric to make it out of. Hey, the price is right! Here's their sketch of it:

So long as it doesn't have snaps to connect the crown and front brim, it looks fine. (No golf caps, in other words.) The Wild Ginger software is pretty easy to use, and should allow you to customize the hat easily. One word of advice: make sure you have a teensy bit of "wearing ease" in the band measurement. Nothing like a too-tight hat to make a boy cranky.

Okay, I just made the above pattern out of some scrap fabric, and the shape of it doesn't really look like the illustration... it goes straight up and doesn't "poof" out to the sides at all. (I rarely do mock-ups but I'm glad I did this time!) I dig around in my pattern stash and found a pattern for a Simplicity peasant blouse/fitted bodice combo that included a newsboy cap. We need the hat by Saturday so it looks like we'll be using that pattern!

Amy, will you post a pic when you are done? I'll need to make something similar soon. Thanks, Joanna

I consider myself a very good seamstress, yet the PI boys trousers pattern is confusing I had the worst time trying to figure out the fly... and I never did figure it out by the instructions, I ended up having to mess with it on my own! Love how they turned out though (okay I still have handsewn, buttonholes and buttons to add).

I do promise that I'm working on older boy's things. The process of a fly is different from anything in women's sewing, but once you get the steps straight in your mind, it does work pretty easily, I promise. Of course, I can't say much about the PI boy's trousers, as I've not used that pattern, so I'm not terribly helpful there. But yes, a new set is in the works... along with everything else.

My husband made my son's pants, so I don't have any firsthand experience with the PI pattern... but apparently the pic of the fly is drawn backwards, from what I've heard. Just about everyone I know who's used this pattern complains about how confusing it is.

If its backwards on the front pic than im in trouble lol.. The directions are confusing because 1) take 2 pieces muslin, sew straight edge togheter, turn right 2) take piece of muslin and piece of fabric, right sides, sew together on curved line) 3) take the right piece (which i believe is the muslin and piece of fabric..though it doesnt say all that clear) and sew on right side of front. 4) take one piece of muslin and sew to the left side (the only thing is...they have you cut out 3 pieces of muslin and 2 fabric)... then you have to sew it on and then put on the fabric piece... but the fabric piece has raw edges on finished edges and doesnt make any sense whatsoever. so I looked at finished picture and did it the way that made sense. the first time I tore out a million times, the second time I had no problem putting it together (my way!). I figure I have them put together, you cant see the fly on it..and it works great, but I was at my wits end with them!! I haveonce again...i can scan if wanted...
