I'm planning on making a a dress with coat sleeves.  I borrowed a dress from some people in my group a while ago, and haven't given it back yet (mainly because  I never see them.).  The dress has coat sleeves and I was planning on using the sleeves to draft a pattern as they fit pretty well.  The only thing is, at the bottom of the sleeve. theres a gusset near the wrist.  I think it may be because the sleeves were too tight, but I was wondering if anyone had ever seen this on an original?

I've seen it on men's sleeves, not womens.

I would imagine it was a piecing issue or fitting issue. Probably the wrist was too small.

I have one dress I made that actually has a gusset mid arm at a seam because I didn't have enough fabric to cut the whole sleeve as one. Matched the design up and made it work. I bet you've never detected it either. ;-)

I have an original brown silk day dres (c. 1850s), that has piecings in the sleeves.  In fact, there are a number of places where it was pieced to accomidate growth or fit someone a bit bigger when passed on.
Hope it helps a bit.

Alright!  I was just wondering if I would be doing anything wrong if I put one in, but since I'm going to enlarge the sleeve slightly (easier to roll up that way) I won't need a gusset.
Thanks for the help!
