do the colors of the trousers, vest, and jacket need to match?  just the trousers and vest... just the vest and jacket?  can all 3 be different?

this is mostly for my boys, but my younger son is almost 10 and my older son is almost 14, and eventually i'll be outfitting my husband as well.

my younger son has linen trousers in a dark blue, my older son has linen trousers in a tan/brown check.  i need to make them vests and jackets, but i'm out of the blue linen and only have enough of the plaid to make a vest.

and side note, does anyone has a good place to get fabrics for shirts that are printed and not a quilting weight cotton?  i'm tired of plaids and stripes.

Period photos and illustrations show everything from "suits of dittoes" to none of the pieces matching, so take your choice.

I believe plaids and stripes show up much more frequently in original shirts than do prints.  Others can speak to that question better than me.
