Do you have an estimate of the weight of the yarn of the hand-knit ones?  I'm not exactly sure what I'll need to be looking for when I'm buying yarn, and most of the ones I've seen pictures of in books or online have been machine-knit.

Also is is appropriate to wear openwork stockings alone, or were they always worn over other stockings?  The whole concept of inner and outer stockings hadn't occurred to me until I read Socks and Stockings, and while it makes sense in terms of chilly England, it sounds oppressive for steamy Texas.  And I'm definitely in the steamy part, not the oven part.
