I am finally getting around to making a warm overshirt or coat for my husband. Making men's  clothes is still pretty new for me.  I have looked at old images of overshirts and smocks and all I see are solid colors, unless the plaids or stripes just don't show up on old images ( which I know sometimes happens).
I did find one wool plaid shirt labeled as C. 1860. So I am wondering, would this be an overshirt:

I thought about making a plaid overshirt, but didn't know if that was very common.
If I understand correctly, the muted greens, tans, etc as well as red were common for solid colored overshirts, but what about a medium blue? I have a piece on hand that would work well.
Thanks for any help!  trish B.

Edit: I mean to say muted blues, not greens. Good grief.   The piece of blue wool I have is brighter than I think it should be for an overshirt. It is approximately a cobalt blue.

Hi Trish,
If you go to this link, there are several photos of men in overshirts.  Some are soldiers but I don't think that would be a big deal.  Many of overshirts soldiers wore at the beginning of the war were shirts from home.  There are a couple examples of companies or units trying to have a uniform overshirt, but most I think were custom shirts from home.  There are some examples of plaid shirts.  Colors, I think that is guess.
